Actually, the “door” in question is actually not a door at all!
If we turn this “door” clockwise we reveal…
…that it is actually a door frame!!
It is a piece of paneling from the doorframe in the First Class lounge based off a piece that was actually recovered:
This piece isn’t more than 3cm at maximum thickness!
In reality, if the panel in the movie was based off the actual panel,
It shouldn’t have held either of them afloat!!
I agree and disagree to some extent.
The door or door frame, whatever it was could have held both of them up at the start because Jack still had energy in him, meaning that he could have held the door frame not to rely on it but to use it as a guide to keep him afloat as he was suspended in water. As soon as Jack lost energy and couldn’t keep himself afloat, this was when he put all his weight on the edge of that door / frame. That is why he let go. It isn’t necessary to use all the mathematical things about buoyancy to find out about this. It’s just logic. Wood stays afloat in water but as the wood gets more and more saturated, the wood will become heavier too. With that said, Rose was on the door/ frame so she sped up the process of saturation. If Jack was fully on the door/ frame like Rose, the door/ frame would have sunk much, much faster; hence why Jack let go.
In conclusion, The door may be able to stay afloat for a while n the situation that Jack is supporting himself. Even under the circumstances that he fully supported himself, it is inevitable that the wooden door/ frame would have sunk anyway. Him not fully relying on it just slowed down the process and allowed Rose to stay on the door/frame for a while longer.
